Worship & Service Team Duties
During your month of service the team will be responsible for filling the
following worship and service positions: Greeter, Acolyte, Assistant Minister,
Reader, Usher, Counter, Nursery Attendant, Fellowship, Preschool Volunteer,
& Altar Guild
Greeter:  Welcome all who are coming to Worship. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before
service. Bulletins and the hymns books needed for the service are placed at both entrances. New
families receive a Welcome bag which is located on top of the bookcase in the sanctuary. Invite
newcomers to sign the guest book and offer a name tag. Remind members to wear a Name Tag.
When possible have a member site near a new family to assist with liturgy.

Acoloyte:- Acolytes light the candles and assist with serving communion when needed. It is
recommended that youth acolytes wear a robe when performing the duties of acolyte. The candle
lighter and lighter are in the closet hanging on the left side. At the beginning of the 1st hymn
approach the Altar and bow. Walk up onto the platform. Light the left candle on the altar first, and
then the right candle. The Christ candle is lit only on special Sundays, inquire when it should be lit.
During the final hymn, the candles are extinguished in reverse order from how they were lit. An
acolyte will assist with Communion by serving grape juice when needed. Call the youth who have
attended confirmation for additional acolytes.

Assistant Minister: Please arrive early for the service so that you can speak to the Pastor the
morning of your service. Together you can highlight the Assisting minister's parts during the
service. Generally, the assisting minister reads the Psalms, the Prayers of the People, several
small prayers and proclaims the Sending. The Assisting Minister distributes the wine during
Communion.

Readers: You will receive copy of the texts the week prior to the Sunday you are scheduled to
read from the church secretary via email, if you have email. There will also be a printed copy
placed on the lectern on Sunday morning. Readers will read both the Old Testament scriptures
and the Epistle. A chair placed near the lectern so that you can remain up front during the reading
of the Psalm. Familiarize yourself with the reading before Sunday morning. It is recommended that
you actually read the lessons out loud ahead of time. If you have questions of how things should
be pronounced, contact Pastor Diane.

Ushers:  Before the service locate the offering plates and recruit the child to pass the children's
offering basket. You will pass the offering plates starting from the front of the sanctuary. During
the singing of the offertory the offering is brought forward to the Altar. The usher also directs
which rows to go forward for Communion. After service return the hymnals to the bookshelves, and
collect discarded bulletins for recycling. Assist newcomers during the service to find a restroom or
the nursery. It is helpful for the usher to sit in the back of the sanctuary.

Counters: Count the offerings on Sunday morning following the service. Alex Connors will train
new counters the first time you do this.

Nursery Attendants: (Team of 2 people) Nursery attendants prayerfully watch over the infants
and toddlers of members and guests during the service.  There are TV movies available for small
children in the nursery and on the bookshelf outside the office.  There is a speaker hooked up so
that you can hear what is going on in the sanctuary.  Lights for the nursery are on the right side of
the room as well as in the hall at the back.  There are crafts available for the children in bins and
drawers with crayons at service, but one person will bring the toddlers downstairs to families for
communion.  You'll know when this is by listening to the monitor.  Bring them down during the
passing of the peace.  This team could help set up for fellowship following service.

Preschool volunteers:  This is not a Sunday duty, but rather a during the week duty on either
Wednesday or Thursday.  Volunteer will be scheduled by the team leader and schedule will be
given in advance tot he Preschool teacher for the month. The lead teacher is Melanie Shaw
(745-5683).  Preschool volunteers will visit BOTH classes to read, do a children's talk (15 minutes)
or interact with the children in some other way.  The teachers would like us there at 9:30 a.m.
Pastor Diane has books available to use if you need one or contact the preschool teachers for
ideas.

Altar Guild: This is organized by Cathy Moorman.  Please contact her if you would like to
particpate in the Altar Guild duties. You can contact her through the church office 745-0726.
